They are planning to set up an ecosystem for mobile network in Indonesia focusing on startups and developers that are working in the mobile space. This ecosystem is expected to enable Indonesian startups and developers to take their idea or innovations to a global audience.

Nokia would like to initiate discussion with startups and developers in Indonesia that are willing to develop great applications for Nokia and they will give their full support to these startups and developers. Among others, Indonesian startups and developers will be able to take advantage of Forum.Nokia, a portal that provides various tools to help developers designing, developing, and distributing their mobile applications (through Ovi Store).

Stay tuned for more detailed information from @nataliardianto at #StartupLokal!

UC Mobile, a China based mobile developer, offers its mobile browser to Indonesians (available in Bahasa Indonesia). The company claimed its browser has been used by more than 100 million users across 145 countries (Opera claimed Opera Mini has been downloaded by “only” 62.3 juta users). In China, UC Mobile holds 80% share of mobile browser market.

According to Yu Yongfu, UC Mobile CEO, during his interview with VivaNews in Jakarta, one of the primary reasons for entering the Indonesian market is Indonesia is the 4th most populated country in the world. In addition, there are some similarities between Indonesia and China, both countries have a large number of mobile Internet users.

Andi Zain, a UC Mobile representative in Indonesia, added that for most Indonesian, mobile phone is their primary computer. Mobile is also their first Internet TV. They also access their email from their mobile phone. Since 80% of Indonesians mobile Internet users have low end mobile phone (less than US$170), fast, light browser becomes very important. Moreover, Internet infrastructure in Indonesia is sometimes unstable. Indonesians need a browser that can solve these problems and UC Mobile browser offers a solution.

When asked about mobile Internet prospect in Indonesia, Yu Yongfu said he believes Indonesia has a big potential. Besides being the 4th most populated country in the world, mobile Internet growth in Indonesia is the 4th fastest in the world after China, Japan, and the United States. Indonesia’s mobile phone market is also much much bigger than its computer market.

Yu Yongfu also said there are four similarities between mobile Internet users in Indonesia and China as follows:

They use the same handset. In Indonesia and China, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, and mobile phones with MTK chipset are very popular. In the United States, iPhone, BlackBerry, Palm, and Motorola are more popular.

They are young and energetic.

They buy their mobile phone in open market. In South Korea, Japan and the United States, users buy their mobile phone through their mobile operators.

They use the Internet mostly for accessing information and social networking.

With these similarities, Yu Yongfu believes UC Mobile will be able to understand the needs of mobile Internet users in Indonesia better than Opera.

Startup development in Indonesia is a fascinating phenomenon. The restoration of Indonesia’s creative atmosphere and the fast growth of social media also contribute significantly in triggering the spirit and development of startups in Indonesia, this can be evidenced by the emergence of events about the startup world and web development in Indonesia. Started by Yahoo! Open Hack Day some times ago and then continued by BarCampID, FreSh, Ignite Jakarta, TedxJakarta, and other communities that are not yet detected on the radar.

In several cities in Indonesia, the growth of such community is increasing. In Jakarta there is #startupLokal, a community for startups that was initiated by several friends from Jakarta startups. Bandung has FOWAB (Bandung Web Developers Forum) and Jogjakarta too has its own, Bancakan 2.0. Bancakan 2.0 was established and directed to become a similar community like #startupLokal and FOWAB.

Bancakan 2.0 held its first event in February 24th 2010 and received positive responses from Jogjakarta startups. At its first event, about 40 people gathered, shared their experiences, provided opinions, and brainstormed with each other. They also developed a new network and community they always hope to exist in their city, Jogjakarta. During the discussion they decided to hold this kind of event routinely in Jogjakarta.

The 2nd Bancakan’s meet up was held in March 26th 2010. The number of participants attended the event reached 80 people. At this 2nd event, the crews of Bancakan 2.0 developed a partnership with DailySocial that agreed to become the media partner for the next Bancakan 2.0 events.

Continuing the spirit of Jogjakarta startups, the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Bancakan 2.0 meet ups were held. At those 3 events, Bancakan 2.0 received higher appreciation and attracted more attendances and volunteers to participate at the event.

“If you find your product is suck, work hard to make it less suck!”

Always send a short email with a link to your working product. It is cheap now to develop a working product, you should always have a working product when you start looking for money from angel investors.

With your product, show some metrics. Metrics can be revenues, number of users, traffics, etc.

Build expertise in your space. Write some intelligent stuff in your blog. Leave meaningful comments on and be involved in discussion about articles related to your startup published in important blogs such as TechCrunch, VentureHack, etc. Tell them that you are smart and know what you are doing.

Make friends with people who know angel investors.

Know how much you need and just raise the amount you need.

Prepare your own valuation and explain it to them.

Pick the right angels. Look at their track record (The Funded can help). Ask what they can do for you. You need their help, network, and expertise as well, not only their money. You want angels who want to win and will do whatever it takes to win. If they win, you also win. Close the deal as soon as possible.

If you get “no” multiple times, be persistent, humble, and classy. Ask why they don’t invest and what can you learn. If your team is the problem, ask if they can help you to find the right people.

When to sell? If you are poor, it is good to sell your startup at anytime. Selling too early what makes people get rich, but selling too late what makes people still poor. Sell because intelligent people have many ideas and they will come back. Idea is actually nothing.

How to get attention for your startup? Not TechCrunch coverage, but build a brilliant idea!

Setelah Jason selesai berbicara, dimulailah acara pitch para startup berikut:

SeePort – Alat komunikasi video melalui Internet.

Wuuuiiihhhhh… what a genius!

Elon Musk at the Founder Showcase from Adeo Ressi on Vimeo.

Entrepreneurs harus fokus membuat strong, good product yang benar-benar melokal dan jangan hanya membuat me too product. Sekali lagi, kata Sarah, jangan membuat me too product, buatlah sesuatu yang sangat local dan unik. Dan jangan lupa, buatlah a great product!

What a great night!

Catatan Samping

Fowab, a gathering event for IT enthusiasts, web developers, and startups, was recently held last Saturday, July 31, 2010, in Bandung, West Java. The event started at 18:00 and lasted until 22:00 in a local book café, Bandung S28. This third Fowab event is more special since some members of Jakarta (#startupLokal) and Jogjakarta (Bancakan) startup communities were in attendances, creating an intense startup atmosphere at the event. The event was a huge success; a lot of people were so excited talking tirelessly and sharing their knowledge about the startup world and IT industry for the entire night.

The main speakers of this Fowab event are Fares Farhan from Scraplr, Selina Limman from Urbanesia, Aria Rajasa from GantiBaju, Satya Witoelar from Koprol, and Dondi Hananto (someone with connection to Indonesian angel investors). The main session was moderated by Rama Mamuaya from DailySocial. Some of the speakers, Fares, Selina, and Satya, attended and presented their startup during the last Echelon 2010 event (Asia’s leading web technology event) in Singapore.

Fares talked about his experience in presenting his startup and why entrepreneurs must be fully prepared when presenting their startup in front of a lot of people. Selina shared her experience with her startup, Urbanesia, including the story behind the recent investment they received from East Ventures, a Singapore based investment company. Aria explained the reason why GantiBaju was picky when accepting investors’ offer to invest in GantiBaju. He didn’t want to pick a wrong investor and took a wrong decision for GantiBaju. Aria also advised the attendees to carefully review the contract offered by each investor before signing accepting and signing it. Dondi said that Indonesian angel investors start showing their interest to invest in Indonesia’s IT startups and shared tips on how to work together with investors. Last, Satya chatted about the acquisition of Koprol by Yahoo and how could Koprol grow to its current state. These speakers received a standing applause from the attendees who showed their enthusiasm for and interest in the topics being discussed.

In addition to the main session, there were also side sessions as follows:

10 by 10, this was a session for startups to present their product. Participating startups are Vimpleshop by Brian Ardhi, AnakUI.com by Muhammad Ilman Akbar, Kampoeng TI by Ahmad Syarif, internal.web.id by Wisnu Manupraba, Blanjaa.com by Aldi Daswanto, and Gamelan by Ari Prasetyo

Introduction of SWAStartup, a startup incubator program, by Natali Ardianto

Introduction of SparxUp, an award program for startups, by Rama Mamuaya

Introduction of Indonesia Young Creative Entrepreneur by the British Council

Another side session, the introduction of Hack Camp event, was cancelled due to limited time available. After the event was ended, some Fowab participants continued with networking and discussion with other participants until midnight, most of them went to street side restaurants. The topics discussed mainly focus on Indonesia’s local startups and its local startup community. Take a look at the two photos below to see how crowded it was the after-event talks:

I personally think this event is very interesting and I believe others share the same interest as I do. Fowab is not the only event for Indonesian startups, there are #startupLokal in Jakarta, Bancakan in Jogjakarta, and suWec in Surabaya. All of them are a monthly event. The number of startup events held in different cities in Indonesia shows that Indonesian startup communities are progressing with a faster pace compared to the prior years and signifies that Indonesian startups are on the rise.

The goals of the fellowship is to gather creativepreuneurs in the creative industry and become an incubator for startups in the information, communication and technology creative industry. According to Widi Nugroho, Executive General Manager, Multimedia Division, Telkom, on Friday, July 9, 2010, more than 1,000 startups have submitted their creative idea to Telkom through this fellowship. “This year, we took the initiative and invite them to show their creativity. From about 1,000 applications, we had selected only 11 finalists,” he said.

The theme of this year fellowship is “Digitalpreneur for National Character Building”. There are several categories the applicants can submit their idea for, retail/consumer, small and medium business, enterprise, and rural/maritime solutions.
The West Java company will spend $50 million this year to upgrade its network, Rinaldi Firmansyah, president director, said in an interview resently in Jakarta. He declined to provide a comparative number or a time frame for the investment. “Competition in the cellular business” is a concern, he said. “What we’d like to do is increase broadband sales.”

Telkom, as the No. 2 Southeast Asian cellphone company is known, expects to raise the number of its high-speed Internet users 13-fold to two million by 2010, the executive said. The data services unit’s sales tripled in the first half. By comparison, the mobile business rose 21 percent as competition drove down the costs of voice calls to as little as 150 rupiah, or 2 cents, a minute.

“They need to do more in the other divisions like data, Internet and multimedia,” said Felix Sindhunata of PT Mega Capital Indonesia. “They need to create products.”. The number of people using Internet services in Indonesia is forecast to rise 72 percent to 43 million by 2009, according the Indonesian Internet Service Provider Association. The country has a population of about 234 million people.

Shares of Telkom rose 6.4 percent this year, trailing a 25 percent gain in the benchmark Jakarta composite index. Telkom’s second-quarter profit rose 52 percent from a year earlier to 3.58 trillion rupiah, with the bulk of the gain coming from its cellphone business, as sales expanded 24 percent to 29.8 trillion rupiah.

First-half revenue from data services, comprising mostly high-speed Internet, tripled to 1.11 trillion rupiah. Revenue from cellphone services climbed to 11.4 trillion rupiah, accounting for about 38 percent of Telkom’s sales.

Hutchison CP Telecommunications, a unit of Li Ka-shing’s Hutchison Telecommunications International, started services in March 2007 and operates in four of Indonesia’s wealthiest islands, taking the number of operators in the country up to 10. Hutchison is seeking investments in Southeast Asia after the sale of its Indian unit to Vodafone Group for $11.1 billion.

Increased competition lowered average revenue per customer at Telkom’s cellphone unit, Telekomunikasi Selular, descending 8 percent to 78,000 rupiah, or about $8.40, during the first six months of this year. There are 8.5 million personal computers in Indonesia, but Telkom has just 150,000 high-speed Internet customers, Firmansyah said. “There is a big opportunity for broadband,” he added.

By contrast, about 80 million Indonesians, or 34 percent of the population, have a subscription for a mobile phone.
